In London, a woman handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser managed to slip out of her shackles and commandeer the vehicle, taking it on a brief joyride before colliding with traffic dividers. Initially, the woman had been stopped by police when suspected of driving under the influence in a stolen vehicle. After she was securely in custody, officers began to investigate whether the vehicle she was driving was stolen or not. While their attention was diverted, the woman apparently freed herself from her handcuffs and sped away in the cruiser [the keys to which had been left in the ignition].
Using the GPS unit mounted in the squad car, police were able to track the woman’s flight and apprehend her when she crashed the vehicle into a guard rail a few miles up the road. Waterloo Regional police inspector Bryan Larkin said that such an incident is extremely rare and the department is still attempting to determine how the woman was able to free herself from the handcuffs.
