The Aston Martin One-77: Welcome to Earth

That’s it, the only available picture of the Aston Martin One-77. It’s like an alien spaceship landed in Nebraska and every automotive website out there is trying to decipher it’s intentions. Will you eat us or give us the secrets to space travel? What we know right now is that it has a carbon fiber chassis, a handcrafted aluminum body, and a 7.0 liter V12 engine. But other than that, nothing. We’ll know more come the 2008 Paris Motor Show in October, where the car is supposed to debut.

Judging from the name and the promo website, only 77 of these cars will be made, and it’s expected to carry a price tag of as much as $2 million. I’ll take ten.

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: “I’m Sorry Officer, I Didn’t Mean To Break The Sound Barrier”

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the product of the Corvette Z06, a $100,000 budget, and a slight inferiority complex - and we are pretty damn impressed. With a 6.2-L supercharged small block V8 engine and 638-horsepower [no, that’s not a typo], the new Chevy Corvette ZR1 was built to throw down on the track next to the likes of the Ferarri 599 and the Lamborghini Murceilago.

What began as an LS7 turbocharged engine was quickly upgraded to an LS9 supercharged engine when the LS7’s cylinder walls were found too thin to withstand the boost from the ZR1’s 4-lobe Roots blower which averages about 100-hp per liter. Couple the super-strength engine with a full-width rear-spoiler, boost gauge, and 220-mph read out; independent flight is not entirely out of the realm of possibility. With suspension tuning that allows for more than 1g of lateral cornering grip and a six-speed close-ratio race-hardened manual transmission, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 is more than capable of giving the foreign sports car gods a run for their money.

We say: With all due respect, Mr. Wagoner, it’s about damn time.

New York 2008: Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

LamboGallardoLP560-4-8.jpg picture by willfusion

Following its official debut in Geneva the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 has given its next stage performance at the New York Auto Show. While using the original 5-year old, and top selling, design of the Gallardo as an influencing template Lamborghini set off to make an all new car that would result in an all improved Gallardo LP560-4. The wider rear and lowered snout combining with the minimalist lines of the shell of the Gallardo LP560-4 do nothing to reveal the new chassis, new engine and all new 4 wheel drive transmission.

The number signature of the Gallardo LP560-4 seem a bit odd for Lamborghini but they are directly derived from the specs. from the car. The “LP” comes from the “Longitudinal Posterior” of the rear engine. The “560″ comes directly from the number of horses being produced by the new 5.2 liter V10 engine. The “-4″ represents the number of wheels being turned by the four-wheel drive transmission of the car. Rather than change the name from a model that has sold 7100 vehicles from the Lamborghini factories, and since Gallardo-2 or Gallardo “The Next Generation” are a bit cheeky, the designation LP560-4 must have seemed simple enough.

However, tucked within the details provided by Lamborghini in their Official Press Release is the secret detail that will be sending this Gallardo LP560-4 flying out of the factories. With their new V10 and despite a 3.2 second zero-to-sixty-two rating, the Gallardo LP560-4 has reduced its Carbon emissions by 18% from its prior model. That gives the Gallardo LP560-4 a CO2 rating of 327 g/km with the paddle shifters or 351 g/km with the manual transmission. ….Okay, so they are not Prius numbers, but what could you expect?

For more details on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 check out the full photo gallery, the marketing video and the very lengthy and extensive Official Press Release provided by Lamborghini that follows. (more…)
