The first official data in a murky sea of rumors regarding the power numbers on the 2009 Nissan 370Z has emerged in the form of an easy-to-miss photo caption on the LA Auto Show website. The power output of the fresh 3.7-liter V6 is a confirmed 332 HP, up 26 from the previous 3.5-liter, partly as a result of the new whizbang VVEL system, or Variable Valve Event and Lift. The redesigned Fairlady Z breaks through the usual bloat-a-thon most automakers disguise as platform development and gets both a smaller wheelbase and lightweight body materials. The innovative Variable Valve Event and Lift system is Nissan's take on how the greasy bits in this new engine should be controlled. VVEL gives the Engine Control Module complete control of both valve lift and timing using DC stepper motors to increase cylinder head flow efficiency. Translation: More power, better fuel economy and greater responsiveness. Transmission choices include a 6-speed that actually does the heel-toe downshift throttle blip for you electronically or a 7-speed automatic specifically tailored to the killjoy tastes of Buzz Killington.
