2011 BMW M5

2011 BMW M5
Here is a first look at some spy shots that have just been unveiled of the new 2011 BMW M5. While the M5 is powered by a 5.0 liter V10 engine, this one will have the twin-turbo, direct injected 4.4-liter V8 which will have this car speeding off with just the slightest touch of the gas pedal.

BMW Z4 M will aim at Mercedes SLK fans

BMW are getting ready to unleash their rival to the Mercedes SLK, and fight the Porsche Boxter on its home turf. The Z4 M Coupe, the new muscle from BMW’s stable will sport no less than four tailpipes to take away the gases from the twin-turbocharged 3.0 litre six-cylinder 343 bhp engine or the 4.0-litre V8 propulsion system.

There will be a factory limited 155 mph version and a 171 mph V Max version available. This will mean it will be able to reach 60mph in less than five teeth-shattering seconds. The power will be provided to the rear wheels and there will be a big benefit from aerodynamics and emissions reduction with a little help from the company’s Efficient Dynamics Programme, which will not only help to cut through the air with less resistance for more speed and fuel economy, but also lower its Co2 emissions.

The new vehicle will also be equipped with a retractable steel top, taking it away from BMW’s more traditional canvas roof and giving another reason for Mercedes SLK dealers to worry about this new kid on the block.

There are some new electric features that include a stop/start system for greater fuel economy in the city. And its looks as if the Z4 will be missing the hand break replaced by an electronic breaking system. There will also be an iDrive computer setup with an LCD panel and controller which amongst other things allows the passenger easy control of the audio system, air-con, sat-nav and phone. The iDrive also replaces the medieval “check engine” light with a large array of plain English diagnostic tools for the driver to monitor.

The vehicle will also take on board the latest BMW stick shift option, the worlds only seven-speed double-clutch transmission that has an amazing eleven electronically controlled choices of program for the driver to select from for a high speed getaway.

On the exterior the bodywork has taken a radically simple direction with very smooth lines running down the sides to the matching side grille air intakes. The front spoiler is mounted on heavy looking brackets to help give it a more muscle car appearance from the front.

Out of sight the platform is the same as is used in the current 3-series models with upgraded suspension and a slightly lower to the ground, road hugging set-up.

The first models will roll off the production line in Regensburg in Germany, it is then expected that production will shift to the US ready for its launch in late 2009.

The photos show the “disguised” test model that looks about as incognito as Madonna at the Vatican wearing big pair of shades.

BMW 335xi with all-wheel drive in 2008: Is Audi getting too close?

BMW 335xi 2008BMW has announced that they will be putting their xDrive all-wheel drive system in the 335i in 2008. The new 335xi is said to have better take-off at zero-to-sixty by .1 and .2 seconds depending on the transmission. But is this choice a response by BMW to the expressed demands of owners looking for the added stability or performance of an all-wheel drive 335 or are they merely responding to added market pressure for a strong Audi Quattro line-up?

BMW does not seem accustomed to competing against other brands as they have been the trend setters and market dominant luxury sport coupe for years. Audi on the other hand has had great rally and race success with their Quattro racers and have recently made strong improvements in their design and interior quality. So much so that many in the auto industry are sitting up to take notice; including BMW.

The BMW 335xi will house the same twin-turbo engine with its 300-hp straight-six as the 335i. The improved sensitivity to the potential loss of traction with the xDrive all-wheel drive system will help manage to keep the BMW snug on its line and just ahead of the Audi Quattro, or so they hope. Look for the BMW 335xi in the 1st quarter of 2008, but you may have a hard time finding one in your local dealers lot. The 335i took work to locate unless you ordered one from the dealership. The 335xi may just require the same.

Mike Burroughs’ 1988 BMW 635CSi

Mike Burroughs is a world class automotive photographer and proud owner of his 1988 BMW 635CSi. When considering working with Mike (for photography purposes), I was fishing through his Flickr and came across a relatively rare BMW that he seemed to photograph multiple times. I quickly found that it was his own ride and when I contacted him about it, he was more than happy to talk.

There is nothing too extraordinary about Mike’s car, but in a sense, that’s what makes it so special. It’s clean, sleek and keeps a low profile. I found that it may take you some time to fall in love with this car, but once you do, there’s no going back. I went ahead and did a small interview with Mike and this is what we came up with:

What is the make, model and year of your car?

It’s a 1988 BMW 635CSi. It’s badged an L6 from the dealer it came from, however, the L6’s production was ceased in 1987. It was badged an L6 due to it having all of the L6 options (being an entirely leather wrapped interior, including the headliner, center console, shift surround, glove box, and everything else short of the carpet).

How long have you had it?

I’ve owned the car since January. I bought it stock from a fellow BMW enthusiast in Winchester TN, just after a friend wrecked my old ‘85 535i. It’s my “daily driver”.

Does it have a nickname?

No nickname yet, just “the 6″. No one else I know has one, and it’s not a common car, so “6″ says enough.

What is the theme of your car?

There’s no real theme, just low and classy. Perfect fitment is my eventual goal, but prime wheels and a good stance is the “theme” if there is one.

What was your first car?

My first car was an S10, but it wasn’t long before I made the leap to BMWs.

Any wild stories about your Bimmer?

None yet, aside from a few “small” things here and there. I’ve been pulled over for “throwing sparks” due to the ride height. The exhaust clips interstate reflectors quite regularly. Pretty uneventful ownership thus far. My car has been to the Netherlands though. The original owner shipped it over there during his military duty. That’s probably the most exciting bit about it.

What are your current modifications?

BBS RS285/286 (18×8.5 and 18×9.5 et13) allow the 6 to roll, while it’s held up by a custom mashup of parts (Ground Control, HyperCo, and thanks to Rob Case) to produce the lowest coil over possible (they’re all the way up). That’s about it. The basics, such as an exhaust and other small things, but we all know that’s not what makes a car.

What is your favorite aspect of the BMW?

My favorite aspect is the lines of the 6. BMW should be commended on their design- it’s what defines BMWs of the ’80s. Its classic, and I think in 20 years more people will look back and really see the importance of the specific model in the future. I just did what I thought accentuated those lines the best.

Some people hate BMWs and others love them. There really is no “in between”. But I think that we all can agree that Mike has most definitely set a great example for the car community at large with his brilliantly conceived 635CSi. This car truly proves that less is indeed more.

Mike currently does not have a CarDomain page. Who wants to help me pressure him into getting one?

Photography by the very talented and self-taught Mike Burroughs.
